Auburn Offense vs. Baylor: Quick Hits

Here's a few quick offensive hits on Auburn's season opener vs Baylor.

Jackson Arnold Can Move

If you watched any Oklahoma tape at all last year, then you already knew this, but it was nice to confirm it in an Auburn jersey. Time and time again against Baylor, Arnold moved the chains with his legs. Not only did he display tremendous ability in the RPOs and designed runs, he also did a great job moving forward in the pocket and scrambling when receivers were covered. His ability to pick his moment and really accelerate is a defensive nightmare. 16 carries for 137 yards and 2 touchdowns. Have a day, kid.

Two-Man Show at Running Back

Damari Alston and Jeremiah Cobb are the guys in the running back room. The only other back to get a touch was UConn transfer Durell Robinson, and that was after a long drive where both Alston and Cobb were gassed and dinged up. I was impressed with how these guys performed - they ran tough, held onto the football and did their part. This room isn't bursting with talent, but solid performances like last night are perfectly adequate with the surrounding talent plus Arnold's legs. It would be nice for a 3rd back to emerge as the year progresses.

Passing Game Held In Check

Dave Aranda was hesitant to move out of the two-high shell Baylor had going last night. On two instances where he did in the 1H, Auburn hit passes down the field on the Malcolm Simmons seam-ball and Cam Coleman's deep crosser. Aranda's game plan was clearly to keep the ball in front and not let Auburn's speed on the outside win the game. Naturally, this provoked a more run-first approach from Auburn's offense to try and force a safety down into the box, but Baylor was stubborn in their shell and seemed content to let Auburn gash them. 308 rushing yards later, I wonder if Aranda wished he had taken more chances.

Closing Thoughts

  • I'm looking forward to a healthy Eric Singleton Jr. He's got so much pace and suddenness. I like how Auburn lined him up everywhere and got him the ball.

  • Rayshawn Pleasant - we know your name for sure. What a return.

  • Horatio Fields curl on 3rd and 8 with 10 minutes to go in the 4th was huge. Good throw from JA.

  • Offensive line looked okay - Jackson Arnold covers up a LOT in pass protection.

  • If the passing attack can improve and show balance, this team can be a legitimate competitor in the SEC.
